Insulin Resistance Syndrome

According to the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP) guidelines, the metabolic syndrome is identified by the presence of 3 or more of the following criteria:

Central obesity as measured by waist circumference (in men, >40 inches; in women, > 35 inches. *
Atherogenic dyslipidemia (elevated triglycerides (fasting triglyceride >150 mg/dL; low HDL (in men <40 mg/dL; in women <50 mg/dL); small, dense LDL particles
Hypertension >130/85 mm Hg
Insulin resistance (hyperinsulinemia) with or without glucose intolerace
Prothrombotic or proinflammatory states

Consider cultural differences in waist circumference. Asians may have a small baseline waistline, and may qualify for waist circumference criteria with 27 to 30 inches, African-Americans may be overweight with no correlating waist circumference because of of small waists and large hips.
